Field Experience

Undergraduate Programs

Teacher preparation programs at University of Phoenix require completion of field experiences as well as student teaching. Field experiences provide learning through direct observation, while the hands-on experience of student teaching provides valuable growth opportunities. Together, these experiences enable College of Education students to apply theories and information learned during program coursework, and to further develop their skills and knowledge.

Bachelor of Science in Education/Elementary Teacher Education

Field Experience
Students in College of Education teacher preparation programs are required to complete at least 100 hours of field experience by the end of their program. These hours do not include substitute teaching or student teaching. The number of required hours may vary by state. Students are encouraged to check with their University Enrollment Representative and state department of education for any varying requirements.

The field experiences are designed to provide the opportunity to observe experienced teachers in the field and participate in professional development activities. In addition, specific courses in the program will provide opportunities to practice teach in real classrooms.

Student Teaching
Student teaching is an integral component of College of Education teacher preparation programs. It provides a full-time, field-based experience at the appropriate grade and content level. Student teachers work with a cooperating teacher from a school site and with a University of Phoenix faculty supervisor. Each campus establishes operational policies related to placement and completion of student teaching. Student teachers must follow the guidelines in place at their campus. Student teaching placement requirements (e.g., length of placement) vary depending on state regulations.
