Master of Arts in Education/Administration and Supervision
Each student in the Master of Arts in Education/Administration and Supervision program is required to complete an internship experience in a public school. Candidates are required to complete a minimum of 240 hours. The number of hours and placement requirements vary depending on state regulations. Please check with your University Enrollment Representative and state department of education for specific requirements.
Overview
The administrative internship experience will occur in a K-12 public school over the course of a full school year, exposing interns to the array of roles and responsibilities of a K-12 public school principal. Assigned tasks will allow internship students to initiate, organize and complete projects, learn from practical experiences, apply problem-solving and critical-thinking skills, and strengthen leadership skills.
Assessment
In order to successfully complete the program, students must obtain a “B” or better in the internship experience. Candidates are evaluated during the internship course by the University faculty supervisor and the public school’s assistant principal or principal, who serves as site supervisor. Both will continually assess and provide feedback to students, as well as jointly determine if the candidate has met all competencies.
Placement
Placement for the administrative internship is a collaborative effort between the campus college chair, intern and site supervisor. The campus college chair keeps records of local area schools that have agreed to accept University of Phoenix administrative interns and in which affiliation agreements are in place, if required. The intern will request placement at a preferred location and the campus college chair will verify that it is an appropriate school site. The school site must have at least 150 students in attendance and provide for broad experiences as a school administrator.
Supervision
Supervisory responsibilities for the internship course are assigned to the University faculty supervisor and the site supervisor. The University faculty supervisor holds faculty status and will represent University of Phoenix. The site supervisor will represent the school district where the internship experience is being conducted. It is the role of both the University faculty supervisor and the site supervisor to continually assess and provide feedback to students.
